Writers Rising Up is seeking submissions for its Paul Gruchow Earth Day Essay Contest. The submission deadline for the essays, which generally focus on writers’ personal experiences with the natural environment, is April 22.
The contest is named for Paul Gruchow, a Minnesota essayist who met with members of Writers Rising Up for an Earth Day reading at the Eden Prairie Water Treatment Plant in 2001. Local writers attending that event included poets Mary Junge, Shelley Getten, and Vicki Pellar Price, as well as Shikka Malaviya and Jan Mosman.

Submissions to the contest should be original, unpublished works of 1,500 words or less. Art and photos can also be included; all work must be original to the submitter.
The winning entry will receive a $25 award and be published on the Writers Rising Up Winning Writers page. Additional details about this contest and others run by Writers Rising Up are found on the organization’s Contests/Submissions page. Several of the contests are named in honor of writers who have made appearances with the local group. The page also has a link to the submission form for the Paul Gruchow Earth Day Essay contest.
Writers Rising Up is an Eden Prairie nonprofit organization that promotes writers who portray place, natural habitats, and wetlands in their work.
