A Michigan man wanted on a nationwide arrest warrant was arrested in Eden Prairie after officers found a loaded handgun in a backpack during a Nov. 28 traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.
Marc Cortez Sturkey, 23, of Hamtramck, Michigan, is charged with two gross misdemeanor counts of possessing ammunition or a firearm after a felony conviction. State law prohibits him from having either.
Police were called about 6:45 p.m. for a report of a white Nissan Altima swerving over lane lines, the complaint said. The car, displaying New Jersey plates, had pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant along Dell Road.
An officer reported smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw an empty cannabis package on the center console. Another package was visible in a backseat passenger’s pocket, the complaint said.
The front-seat passenger — identified as Sturkey — was found to have a nationwide armed-robbery warrant out of Michigan. Officers detained him at the scene.
A search of the car turned up a Canik TP9 SF Elite 9mm handgun in a backpack on the backseat. The magazine was loaded with 9mm hollow-point rounds. Sturkey admitted the gun and the backpack were his, according to the complaint.
Sturkey was booked into custody. Although he was granted release on $6,000 bail in the Eden Prairie case, jail records show he remains detained because of additional holds, including a Hennepin County warrant and an out-of-state extradition case.
His first court appearance in the Eden Prairie firearm case is set for Dec. 24 at the Hennepin County Ridgedale courthouse in Minnetonka.
