A Lakeville man is accused of stealing more than $1,200 worth of pickleball paddles from the Scheels store in Eden Prairie in two separate incidents, according to a felony complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.
Hoang Huy Le, 63, is charged with one felony count of theft. Police say Le concealed pickleball paddles under his shirt during visits to the store on Sept. 13 and Nov. 2 before leaving without paying.
According to the complaint, Eden Prairie police were called to Scheels, 8301 Flying Cloud Drive, on Nov. 2 after a loss-prevention officer reported seeing a man hide merchandise inside his shirt and walk past all points of sale. When officers attempted to stop him in the parking lot, he briefly hid behind a vehicle and ran before being detained.
The man was identified as Le.
Store surveillance showed that on Nov. 2, Le arrived in the same vehicle he had used in the Sept. 13 incident, the complaint states. Police say he removed packaging and concealed three pickleball paddles valued at $839.85 under his shirt.
In the Sept. 13 incident, Le allegedly entered the store, removed packaging from a pickleball paddle valued at $333, concealed it under his shirt and left without paying.
In all, police say Le stole $1,272.85 worth of paddles between the two incidents.
In a post-Miranda statement to police, Le said he concealed the paddles and left the store without paying and that he resells them at pickleball courts, according to the complaint.
Le is out of custody. His first court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 9 before Judge Dominick Mathews.
