Eden Prairie and Chanhassen residents who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits could see their food support disrupted if the federal government shutdown continues into November, according to PROP Food Shelf officials.
PROP issued the statement Tuesday, Oct. 21, saying the nonprofit — which serves more than 5,000 people annually — is preparing for a potential increase in food and financial assistance requests should SNAP payments be delayed or halted.
“Families who are already struggling to make ends meet are facing heightened insecurity not knowing whether essential food support for their children will be available in November and December,” said Jenifer Loon, executive director of PROP. “This is an especially difficult time as we enter the holiday season and cold weather months that put a strain on family budgets.”
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, one in 13 Minnesotans receives SNAP benefits, averaging about $500 per month for households with children.
To prepare for a potential gap, PROP is urging residents, businesses, and community organizations to donate food or funds in the coming weeks. A group of anonymous donors has pledged $2,000 to encourage others to contribute.
Donations can be made at propfood.org/donate or through PROP’s Amazon Wish List. Food donations can also be dropped off at PROP Food, 14700 Martin Drive, Eden Prairie. The organization’s website lists its most-needed items.
PROP Food Shelf is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides food and comprehensive support services to residents of Eden Prairie and Chanhassen facing financial, housing, or employment challenges.
