After the University of Minnesota announced it will no longer host any high school graduation ceremonies at its campus venues, effective immediately, Eden Prairie Schools confirmed that the U’s decision will not impact the district.
The U’s 3M Arena at Mariucci, home to the school’s men’s ice hockey team, was a hub for many of the Twin Cities’ high school graduations, with 24 schools hosting their ceremonies there over a few-week period this past school year, according to reporting from the Star Tribune.
“Hosting more than 20 outside events with thousands of attendees over a two-week period represents a significant strain on the university’s limited resources that is no longer sustainable,” a U spokesperson said.
While the Class of 2024 graduation ceremony was held at 3M Arena at Mariucci, last year’s Eden Prairie High School graduation ceremony took place at U.S. Bank Stadium on June 4. The date was changed after the district faced community pressure to reschedule the original June 7 date because it conflicted with Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday.
“The U of M’s decision not to host graduations doesn’t impact us; we were not planning to hold our celebration there this year,” Grace Becker, director of marketing and communications for EP Schools, said in an email.
Graduation plans for the Class of 2026 are still being finalized, according to Becker. Information about the date, time and location of the ceremonies will be shared with families once it is available.
