A commitment to spend more than $230,000 per year for the next five years on new cameras worn by police officers and installed in squad cars and the Police Department’s interview rooms will be considered Tuesday, Oct. 1, by the Eden Prairie City Council.

The proposed contract represents a switch from Motorola technology to cameras manufactured by Arizona-based Axon Enterprise, Inc., formerly known as TASER International.

The existing cameras are at the end of their service life, according to a memo by Police Chief Matt Sackett, and research and testing by the department over the last year concluded that Axon makes better and more reliable cameras.

Eden Prairie police officers have used body cameras since 2021.

The new contract is on the city council’s consent calendar, which is a group of items approved with a single vote.

Tuesday’s regular meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Eden Prairie City Center, 8080 Mitchell Road.
