Eden Prairie High School’s softball team shocked Rosemount on Tuesday, defeating the Irish 6-4 on their own field. The Irish are ranked in the top five teams in Minnesota in recent coaches’ polls.
Eagles sophomore infielder Genevieve Streed led the Eagles at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a triple and three singles. Senior center fielder Ayana Lombardy drove in two runs, going 2-for-3.
Junior pitcher Lily Liu earned the win with a complete game, scattering 10 hits over seven innings. She struck out seven Irish batters, walking three.
The score went back and forth, with the Eagles scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Rosemount responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles took a 5-3 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Lombardy and Streed.
Liu and senior shortstop Alex Hall turned a crucial bases-loaded double play on a line drive to Liu, who made a perfect throw to Hall covering second, catching an Irish baserunner straying too far from the bag.
The Eagles improved their overall record to 11-6. They face two non-conference opponents this week, North St. Paul and Maple Grove, on May 16 and 17, respectively, to close out their regular season schedule. Friday, May 17, is senior night and the Eden Prairie Fastpitch Association’s Night at the Park. Game time on both nights is 7 p.m. at Miller Park in Eden Prairie.
The Section AAAA tournament begins May 21 at Miller Park. Teams in the section include the Eagles, Shakopee, Bloomington Jefferson, Waconia, Minnetonka, Prior Lake, Chaska, and Chanhassen.
